Haven’t you always talked about a silent retreat? Heading off into some distant retreat center sitting, walking and writing in silence for 7 days. Of course it’s at the foot of the mountains, near a lake and waterfall. Delicious plant based food available by a private chef.
WAKE UP! I often remind myself the fastest place from here, to where I want to be, is to make peace with what’s happening. How can you stay home, and carve out 48 hours of dedication towards silence. Don’t worry! Maybe it’s Noble Silence, where you practice for a couple hours in the morning and afternoon. Maybe you take quiet time before bed and first thing in the morning. You’ll need to get creative and give your kids, partner, roommates, etc. a heads up. You might have to wear a note around your neck reminding them you’re in noble silence until lunch time, and they are welcome to write down their questions, requests, on the pad of paper in the kitchen. You will have left them instructions that you can write a response in case of emergency, and other wise you’ll meet them for words as soon as you can. Trust me! This is the way to start. And you won’t be alone. You’ll have us during opening and closing ceremonies, and each day, twice a day in face for 30 minute dharma talk with a short guided meditation.
